Easter around the world
Easter has come to our homes. For me it's a symbol of wonderul, warm and sunny spring. For Christians it's the most important holiday of the year. On Easter Sunday they celebrate Jesus's resurrection. Because I'm usually curious about different nations' customs and traditions I tried to find out more about the way Easter is celebrated in different countries. In Poland , where I come from, people pay a huge attention to this spring holiday. A week before Easter, on Palm Sunday , Poles march to church carrying their palms which represent the palm branches that the crowd in Jerusalem scattered in front of Jesus. In some regions there are even competitions for the tallest palm. The following week is extremely busy especially for women who aim to clean and tidy up their homes very thoroughly (as if Easter and Christmas were the only occasions to do it) :P So they clean all windows, polish floors and flat their carpets (if they have any), tidy up cupboards and many ot...
Polish and British artists at Women's Day Festival
On the occasion of International Women's Day I went to see an art exhibition as well as music festival organised by Fish Factory in Falmouth and W.A.N.K. (Women's Art Network Kernow). I have just found out that Kernow means Cornwall in Cornish language :) Obviously, all artists, whose pictures and other pieces of art we could admire and whose songs we were pleased to hear, were women. Mostly from Cornwall and Poland but also from other parts of the United Kingdom. World Book Day in British schools
This week all British schools are celebrating the World Book Day Week. Depending on a school students are doing various activities connected with their favourite books: preparing costumes to wear on the 5th of March, decorating classrooms or classrooms' doors or they read together. In secondary school I'm working in, teachers are reading students a book. All week before each lesson students are listening to two chapters of Ian Serraillier's book titled 'The Silver Sword'. Ian Seraillier was a British novelist and poet. He is best known for writing children's books, 'The Silver Sword' is his most famous novel, published in 1956. The book tells the story of a Polish family during World War II. I must admitt the book is very good and I'm glad that British teenagers may get to know at least a little bit about the war atrocities that Poles experienced. This wartime adventure story was adapted for television by the BBC in 1957 and again in 1971. Below ...
Charms of Poland
Last year, when I attended to Adults Education Centre I was asked to make a presentation on any familiar topic. I thought it could be a great idea to share my knowlegde about the country I come from with other British and made presentation titled 'Charms of Poland'. The other students were delighted:) Since I noticed that lots of people from the UK and USA visit my blog, I decided to present you some wonderful places which are definitely worth visiting in Poland.
