English idioms you must know!

This post begins a new series on the blog - English idioms. According to the Oxford dictionary an idiom is a group of words whose meaning is different from the meanings of the individual words. We don't treat them literally, we need to find a deeper sense. That's why idioms might be tricky for foreign learners. If we want to use them correctly we need to learn them by heart. Today I've prepared for you 7 common English idioms and their Polish idiomatic equivalents.

 czuć się kiepsko/ być nie w sosie/ czuć sie pod psem

Lepiej zostań dzisiaj w domu, widać że jesteś nie w sosie.
Chciałam jechać jutro na wycieczkę, ale będę to musiała przełożyć, bo kiepsko się czuję.

Break a leg! - used when we want to wish somebody good luck for example before an exam or an interview

Enough is enough! - used to tell somebody that you think what is happening should stop

Co za dużo, to niezdrowo./Miarka sie przebrała./Dosyć tego.

Ciągle prosisz mnie o pieniądze, ale nie dostaniesz ode mnie ani grosza więcej. Dosyć tego!

Raz na ruski rok/ raz od wielkiego dzwonu/od święta

Nie jestem zaskoczona, że Mia dostaje złe oceny. Uczy się od święta.
