'She's smiling...' - Present Continuous

Zacznijmy od form czasu Present Continuous (teraźniejszego ciągłego). Poniższa tabelka podzielona jest na cztery kolumny. Druga i trzecia kolumna zawieraja formy naszego czasu. Jest to odmieniony przez osoby czasownik 'be'  oraz czasownik z końcówką -ing.

Let's begin with forms of Present Continuous tense. The first table contains four columns. Column 2 and 3 is the grammatical form of this tense. 'To be' in appropriate form (depending on a person) and a verb with -ing ending.

read - reading

lie - lying

look - looking

talk - talking

hurt - hurting

try - trying

listen -listening

This table shows how we can use short forms of verb 'be' in Present Continuous.

Of course, the pronouns (I, you, she, he, it, we, they) can be replaced by nouns or proper names. (Zaimki osobowe, tj. I, you, she, he, it, we, they, możemy oczywiście zastapić rzeczownikami lub nazwami własnymi.)

 For example:

Emma's looking for a job.

Jason's talking to his son at the moment.

Your behaviour is hurting me!

Rick and I are trying to find a new flat to let.

Our children are listening to music in their bedroom.

temporary situations

sytuacjach tymczasowych (niekoniecznie dziejących się w momencie mowienia, ale w przedziale czasowym, w którym obecnie się znajdujemy np.w tym tygodniu, w tym miesiącu itp.)

I'm living with my sister this week. (normally I live alone)

I'm looking for a new job these days. (I hope I will find it soon)

Annoying habits

irytujacych nawykach (powtarzających się czesto)

You're continually listening to music too loud! (It irritates me.) 

My neighbours are still arguing at night!

I'm always losing my keys!

Definite future plans

zaplanowanej przyszłości 

We're meeting up with Erin and Brad tonight.

On Sunday I'm celebrating my 30th birthday.

Mike and his friends are going to Spain next week.

changing situations

zmianach (szybkich lub powolnych)

Unemployment in our town is increasing rapidly.

The climate is changing gradually.

Stop eating sweets. You're getting fatter and fatter.

Our financial situation is getting better and better.

gradually - stopniowo

get better and better - poprawiać się, polepszać

get fatter and fatter - tyć, robić się coraz grubszym

We add -ing to all verbs to make Present Continuous forms:

Sometimes we double last consonant. It usually occurs in one-syllable words in which sequence of last three sounds is following: consonant, vowel, consonant:
(Czasem podwajamy ostatnią spółgłoskę. Podwójna spółgłoska pojawia sie zazwyczaj w jednosylabowych wyrazach, w których ostatnie głoski to kolejno: spółgloska, samogłoska, spółgłoska.)

but also in some two-syllable words:
(ale również w niektórych dwusylabowych wyrazach)

travelling

When a verb ends with -e, we get rid of this -e first, and then we add -ing:
(Jeśli czasownik kończy sie na literę -e, pozbywamy sie go najpierw, a nastepnie dodajemy końcówkę -ing.)

leave - leaving

starve - starving

argue - arguing
