English idioms

Hello! I'm coming to you with the newest portion of popular English idioms. They are commonly used and that's why it is so important to get to know them if you want to communicate with English native speakers freely. Do you know this feeling when you would like to say an idiom, some nice expression, to enrich your speech or conversation but ... you have no idea what it will be in English? You have even tried to translate the words in your head and explain to your listener what the strange sentence, that you've just produced, meant. Have you ever experienced such a situation? I have 😉. If you have, as well, I'm sure that now you know that it's not the best idea to translate idioms literally 😆. We need to learn them by heart. So... let's have a look at them!

Cześć! Przychodzę do Ciebie z najnowszą porcją popularnych angielskich idiomow. Są one powszechnie używane, dlatego tak ważne jest, abyś się ich nauczył jeśli chcesz porozumiewać się swobodnie z osobami anglojezycznymi. Znasz to uczucie, kiedy chcesz użyć jakiegoś idiomu, ot, jakiegoś fajnego wyrażenia, po to, aby wzbobacić swoją wypowiedź lub konwersację, ale... nie masz pojęcia jak to będzie po angielsku? Już nawet probowałeś przetłumaczyć je słowo w słowo w swojej głowie a potem wyjaśniać swojemu rozmowcy co znaczyło to dziwne zdanie które własnie padło z Twoich ust? Miałeś kiedyś taką sytuację? Ja miałam 😉. Jeśli Ciebie również to spotkało, jestem pewna, że teraz już wiesz, ze tłumaczenie idiomów dosłownie nie jest najlepszym pomysłem 😆. Musisz się ich nauczyć na pamięć. A wiec, do dzieła! Przyjrzyjmy się im!

means 

to accept responsibility, punishment or confront unpleasantness for something bad that you 

have done

Dosłownie znaczy : stawić czoła muzyce (dlaczego akurat muzyce???) a nasz polski odpowiednik to: 

Wypić piwo, którego się nawarzyło / ponieść konsekwencje

Peter cheated many people and now he has to face the music.

The students who ran away from school yesterday will face the music.


Peter oszukał wiele osób i teraz wypije piwo, którego sobie nawarzył.
Uczniowie, którzy uciekli wczoraj ze szkoły, będą musieli ponieść konsekwencje.

To ring a bell

means

to seem familiar; you use this idiom when you think you have heard something before.

Dzwonić dzwonkiem - to tłumaczenie dosłowne, a nasz polski odpowiednik to:

Brzmieć znajomo/przypominać coś

This story rings a bell. I must have heard it before.

I'm not sure about her name but her face rings a bell.



Ta historia brzmi znajomo. Musiałam ją już kiedyś słyszeć.
Nie jestem pewna jak się nazywa, ale jej twarz wygląda znajomo.

To look like a million dollars/bucks 

means

to look incredibly beautiful, extremely good, often because you are wearing something very expensive.

To chyba jeden z niewielu idiomów, które tłumaczymy słowo w słowo. Look like a milion dollars to po prostu:

Wyglądać jak milion dolarów.

W wersji angielskiej możemy powiedziec : dollars (dolarów)  lub bucks (dolców).

You look like a million bucks czyli Wyglądasz jak milion dolców.

I couldn't take my eyes off Ellie last night. She looked like a million bucks!

Wow, look at Charlize Theron in this fabulous dress. She looks like a million dollars!

Wow, popatrz na Charlize Theron w tej fantastycznej sukience. Wygląda jak milion dolarów!
Nie mogłem oderwać oczu od Ellie wczoraj wieczorem. Wyglądała jak milion dolców!

If you can't take eyes off somebody or something, you cannot stop looking at them because they are beautiful, attractive or interesting.

is used to encourage someone who is struggling with some emotional problem to remain cheerful and not to give up.

Out of the blue (also out of a clear blue sky)

If something happens out of the blue it happens suddenly and completely unexpectedly.

Ni stąd, ni zowąd/jak grom z jasnego nieba


We haven't seen each other for 10 years and yesterday she appeared out of the blue!

And then, completely out of a blue sky, the enemy troops attacked us. 

Nie widzieliśmy sie 10 lat a wczoraj ona zjawiła się jak grom z jasnego nieba.
I wtedy, ni stąd ni zowąd, wojsko wroga nas zaatakowało.

To give somebody a free hand
means
to let someone do whatever they think is necessary in a particular situation.

dać komuś wolną rękę

We talked to the manager about our new project yesterday and we've been given a free hand. Now we can start to realize our ideas!

Rozmawialiśmy wczoraj o nowym projekcie z menadżerem i dostaliśmy wolną rękę. Teraz możemy zacząć realizować nasze pomysły!

to wash one's hand of something

is used to say that you don't want to take responsibility for something or to refuse to have anything more to do with someone or something.

umywać od czegoś ręce


You cannot just leave now and wash your hands of the problem, that's not fair!


-Will you help me?
- No, I'm washing my hands of it, I don't want to get into bigger trouble.


Nie możesz tak po prostu wyjść i umyć ręce od problemu, to nie w porządku!

-Pomożesz mi?
- Nie, umywam od tego ręce, nie chcę mieć jeszcze większych kłopotów.

*weirdness - niesamowitość, dziwaczność, upiorność
